VIRTUAL WORLDS
CHAT SPACES
· Children can meet each
other and learn on the Net
Amy Bruckman is a pioneer in the use of virtual environment as educational sources for children. Her project, MOOSE-crossing, is a place where children of 13 and under from all over the world can come and meet each other to chat, build places to hang out in and, last but not least, focus on their learning skills.
· Dreamscape avatars that
hold hands and kiss
Active since 1995, with approximately 100,000 member from over 16 countries, Dreamscape is probably the most successful avatar community ever created. It emphasizes personal presence rather than high end, 3-D graphics. An avatar is the custom built identity the user creates in order to visit a virtual world and can express non-verbal forms of communication, such as facial expressions, gestures and different forms of movement.
· Cyberspace Pinball Machines
and Virtual Theatres
Sony Community Place is a VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language – a 3-D version of HTML, the language that makes a text based Web possible) browser and server software for building multi user virtual world on the Internet. In addition to usual features such as chat rooms, walks, flythrough and 3-D visuals, Community Place offers the chance to make objects perform certain tasks; for example, there is a Cyberspace Pinball Machine, a Virtual Theatre and the Planets world, which features accurate planetary motions.
ON-LINE WORLDS
· Buy land and build a
home in cyberspace
Active Worlds users can claim their own pieces of land in cyberspace and, choosing from a library of thousands of building models, use them to construct homes, palaces, fortresses, towers, or any other kind of building.
· Rome to be reconstructed
in 3-D by 2020
Ancient Rome is going to be rebuilt in cyberspace. The Rome Reborn Project intends to show how Rome looked at different stages between 900 BC and AD 400. The team of computer scientists and archaeologists at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA, hopes to complete the construction of a 3-D Rome by 2020. The future city will allow visitors to move cinematically through streets and forums, led by a virtual guide speaking in Latin or English.
· Cities of Bonn and Berlin
linked by virtual network
In Germany, the decision to move the seat of federal government from Bonn to Berlin has presented the POL I Team Project with the challenge of how to support the co-operation between two cities lying more than 600 km apart. POLI Team is developing as integrative groupware system to provide extensive support for government tasks, such as ministerial business procedures and co-operative editing of documents through shared workspaces. All components are integrated, making complex co-operation easier for all.
